Two Natural Options for Removing Algae from your Roof

SuniIf you live in a moist, humid climate, you will most likely develop black algae on your roof. This unappealing matter not only decreases the value of your home, but can lead to leaks if left untreated. In most cases, your first inclination will be to use bleach to kill the algae. Although effective, bleach can kill the landscaping surrounding your home. For a safer alternative, consider these natural options.

White Vinegar

Most people are surprised to learn that vinegar is antibacterial and antiviral. Due to these properties, it is the perfect weapon for naturally cleaning your home. In an outdoor sprayer, combine the following ingredients:

2 gallons of water
2 gallons of white vinegar

Spray on discolored areas and allow to rest for 30 minutes. Then, rinse with a garden hose. The vinegar will quickly kill the algae growth and remove the streaks from your roof.

Oxygen Bleach

If using the vinegar solution does not work, you may need a stronger cleaning agent. Oxygen bleach offers the same strength of bleach, but lacks the harmful chlorine. The powdery substance may be your best option for removing algae from your roof.

Combine 3 cups of oxygen bleach in an outdoor sprayer with a few gallons of water. Douse on your roof and allow to soak for at least 30 minutes. Then, rinse with your garden hose.

Algae is an unattractive problem on your roof. However, it can cause enormous damage if not removed. Using these natural solutions, you can clean your roof and remove the harmful algae.
